November 2021 Newsletter: Lubaina Himid

Mary Zagoritou of Mary Zagoritou Gallery visited Lubaina Himid exhibition in Tate Modern. Himid (born 1954 in Zanzibar Sultanate now part of Tanzania) is a British artist, educated in Wimbledon in 1976 and Royal Colleges of Art in 1984. Taking inspiration from her interest in theatre, the exhibition unfolded in a very interesting and interactive sequence of scenes designed to place visitors centre-stage and backstage. Part of Himid's exhibition was escorted by music and sound such as the rowing 3-D installation of a rowing boat was created by wooden curly boards to give the shape of a boat and there was the sound of the waves and the plashing of the sea to create for the audience the whole theme of being at sea.

Initially trained at Wimbledon College of Art in theatre design, Himid is known for her innovative approaches to painting and to social engagement. She has been pivotal in the UK since the 1980s for her contributions to the British Black arts movement, making space for the expression and recognition of Black experience and women’s creativity. Over the last decade, she has earned international recognition for her figurative art focusing on themes of cultural history and reclaiming identities. Lubaina Himid works as the professor of contemporary art at the University of Central Lancashire and further as the curator of a number of exhibitions. Lubaina received international recognition for her paintings depicting overlooked scenes of cultural history and everyday life. Lubaina Himid has received honours and awards for her Art and activism particularly for contributions and services since the 80s in the UK to Black Women's Art.
