Su Xianzhong's Dehua porcelain and fire brick sculpture, titled 'Small Paper No, 23 2020' (£8000).Su Xianzhong (born in China 1968) is an established artist from a long line of respected traditional Dehua Blanc de Chine sculptors and the fourth generation of the famed ‘Yun Yu Porcelain Studio’, established by his great grandfather Su Xuejin (1869 - 1919). The materials and the techniques used is Dehua Blanc de Chine porcelain from Su's native Fujian province high-fired at 1220-1230 degrees centigrades. Su incorporates oriental philosophical meditation as the core idea for his sculptures. The 'Paper' series, exhibited in the past in Victoria and Albert Museum, is created by applying clay to fine gauze layer upon layer, which is then manipulated into the desired shape and allowed to dry. After the clay is high fired, the surface gives the appearance of smooth paper. The firebrick that acts as the base had been used in lining the tunnel kilns in the Dehua State porcelain factory which closed down years ago. By incorporating the firebrick, Su created a new work that is powerful and beautiful piece from a failed state enterprise.
